AZ man books 24 radio commercials after attending NYC Bootcamp and now has his own radio show!
"It all started with my trip to NY"

"Just a quick update since last year's seminar in NY.  As you know when I got back to AZ, I started voicing commercials with the local radio station.  I have progressed to on air talent with a daily radio show, also filling in as on air talent for the "DAM MORNING SHOW" and doing live remotes for local businesses. Looking back at the past year it has been just what I was looking for. Thanks."

     Dear Friend,

What are some of the most satisfying and highest paid professions in North America? I’m talking about professions where you can hone a single talent, learn the secrets and potentially make more money in a day (and sometimes in an hour) than the majority of Americans make in a year?

The first two professions are professional athletes and Hollywood actors. But let’s be honest. Short of winning “American Idol,” your chance of becoming a major “player” in either of these industries is just about nil, even if you have the talent.

The third highest paid profession not only provides you time flexibility, you can work from home if you want, is tons of fun, creative, legal, and also allows you to make great money doing something you love.

This amazing industry is professional voice-over. And whether you are a serious beginner or a voice talent already working and wanting to work more, I can help. Just listen to what some of the people who attended my last Bootcamp had to say:

"Knew Susan was for real the minute I met her!"

Listen to Testimonial Now

"The minute I met Susan I knew she was for real. It was just so easy to trust her and say ok, this isn’t just anybody trying to make a buck. So, it was a very safe place, which allowed me to grow. I am excited. I am building a studio. I going to branch out and be bold. I am ready. This did it for me!"

Although I’m a little embarrassed to talk about my success lest you think I’m bragging, it’s important for you to know that everything I teach is based on personal experience. I’ve been a full-time voice-over artist since 1987. I have my own recording studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ (just for the private use of my company) and a full-time staff of 7, including 3 engineers. I’m one of the voices that says “Thank you for using AT&T” and the telephone voice of Citibank, among others. I’ve been featured on CNBC, in Business Week, in the NY Times and on TV’s “To Tell The Truth.” When the game show announcer asked the real Susan Berkley to “please stand up,” I knew I’d made it.

When I started my voice-over career I was a debt-ridden disc jockey working at demeaning part-time jobs just to make ends meet. At one point I had a telemarketing job where I actually sold deodorant crystals to funeral homes! You can’t get any lower than that.

     Then, in 1982, everything changed.

I realized (the hard way) that if I wanted to become successful at voice-over I’d have to do a lot more than just sending out a few demos and waiting for the phone to ring. There are secrets to enjoying a lucrative voice-over business with a steady stream of loyal customers. Some of these secrets are practical, tactical things you should be doing every day. But there’s also a more important, little-known mindset you have to adopt in order to succeed.

The psychological underpinnings of this mindset are based on the work of a prominent Brazilian psychoanalyst named Dr. Norberto Keppe. I met him in 1982 and have been a student ever since. Dr. Keppe’s methodology has some surprising applications to voice-over, teaching us how to avoid self-sabotaging attitudes that can prevent us from achieving our goals. In this Bootcamp, I’ll introduce you to this incredible school of thought and share some key distinctions that will help you gain confidence and increase your chances for success.

It’s a good feeling when your career takes off and you have recording sessions every day. And it also feels good when the day is over and you gratefully realize you made as much money in a couple of hours (while loving every minute of it) than many people make in an entire week at a dead-end job.

Of course I can't guarantee how successful you'll be in voice-over or how much work you'll book. But I can promise that my guests and I will hold nothing back, leave no question unanswered, and do everything we can to share the information, tips and techniques that can vastly increase your chances for success.

If voice-over has been a dream for you, don’t procrastinate any longer. This Bootcamp has the know-how you need to help make your dream a reality. But you must act fast. Because I prefer to work with a small, select group of people where everyone can get lots of personal attention, seating is limited to the first 26 people who call, and I mean it. If you’re person #27, I’ll have to put you on a waiting list or turn you away.

"Well worth every penny!"

"I just took Susan Berkley’s Voice-over Bootcamp and I found it to be incredibly helpful and I learned a lot of great things. I have been working in radio for fifteen years now and doing voice-overs is a whole different animal, contrary to what some people in radio may think. Even though people thought I was going in as a ringer. That was not the case. I’ve gained a lot of valuable information and been able to apply what I learned already. I am ready to go out there and try some of the marketing that Susan taught me. Definitely take the Bootcamp. It is well worth every penny and then some."

My special guests:

Diana Boylston, casting director for voice-over, film and TV:

Credits include: The Big Easy TV series on USA Today, Any Day Now on Lifetime TV, projects for American Movie Classics, and various feature films and commercials. Winner of the prestigious Big Easy musical award for "Always Patsy Cline," Diana is also an accomplished actress, voice-over artist and singer with 12 films to her credit. A gifted coach who is especially sensitive to the needs of actors, Diana brings a unique perspective to casting from both sides of the microphone. Based in New Orleans, Diana says she is always looking for new voices. You'll have ample opportunity to read for her during the Bootcamp.

Adriana Davis: voice-over for industrials and documentaries

Industrial production is a multi-billion-dollar industry, but few people know about this mysterious and lucrative world. Crack the code and you can work steadily doing non-broadcast industrials for corporations, long form narrations and documentaries for film and television. My guest Adriana Davis of d-Squared Media is an award winning producer of industrials and documentaries. Adriana has created two documentaries, "The Life of Frank Iny: A Granddaughter's Journey" and "The Last Jews of Baghdad: End of an Exile, Beginning of a Journey" that have been featured at international film festivals and on public television. She produces corporate videos, promotional packages, commercials and radio programming; You’ll read for Adriana on mic and learn special techniques for complicated technical copy. Plus, she’ll share her tips for marketing yourself to producers of corporate industrials and documentaries. Past attendees say this one session alone is worth the price of admission.

Here’s the breakdown of events:

Day 1: Voice-over Technique

8:30am – noon: Copy Clinic in the studio with Susan Berkley and casting director Diana Boylston

Voice-over technique and microphone workout

Novice voice actors often mistakenly think they have to sound like someone else to become successful. Nothing can be further from the truth. True voice-over success comes when you find your own "signature sound" and learn how to truly use your voice as an instrument. We'll explore:

  • The natural talents you have for free
  • Building on your strengths, beginning to see your weaknesses
  • The seven vocal elements and how to use them to your best advantage
  • What others hear about you that you miss
  • Unlock the hidden power of your voice and get tips for mastering pitch, tone, inflection, tempo, rhythm and vocal placement.
  • How to make a memorable impression on producers and casting directors
  • How to beat the demons of self sabotage
  • Overcome nervousness and mic fright
  • Get that phony announcer sound out of your voice
  • Improve your auditioning skills
  • Learn to take direction like a pro
  • Special techniques for different types of copy
  • Plus: a mock casting session with casting director Diana Boylston. Be a “fly on the wall” and learn what goes on behind the scenes at auditions.

Noon - 1:00 PM: Lunch on your own

1:30 – 4:30 PM: Corporate and Documentary Narrations directed in the studio by Adriana Davis, award winning producer from D-Squared Media

Day 2: Million Dollar Marketing Blueprint

8:30 AM - noon: The "inside scoop" about making serious money in voice-over

I’ll share the marketing plan I used to build my own million-dollar business in complete step-by-step detail. You’ll get a workbook filled with links to voice-over casting sites and a step-by-step outline of my marketing plan. Discover how to:

  • Where and how to market your CD
  • How to get people to listen to your demo and call you for work
  • The in's and out's of union and non-union work
  • Tips and techniques for running a successful voice-over business
  • All the latest about marketing yourself on line
  • The new rules for talent agents: how to find the best for you!
  • Building a successful career outside a major market
  • On-line casting de-mystified
  • How to build repeat business
  • How to negotiate the best price for your work and much, much more!

Noon – 1:00 PM: Lunch on your own

1:00 – 3:00 PM: How to have a demo CD that will get you noticed and get you work

Your voice-over demo can make or break your career. Get it wrong and you'll flush a ton of money down the toilet, embarrass yourself and risk becoming so discouraged that you drop out of the business. Get it right and you'll get booked again and again and again. Susan Berkley and Diana Boylston will share secrets for successful demos and play lots of examples. If you have a demo, bring it along for critique. If you don't, Susan and Diana will "type" you and make suggestions on how to produce a demo that is right for you.

3:00 - 4:00 PM: Home Studio Highlights

Putting in a home studio can greatly increase your voice-over profits. And the good news is, with today's digital technology you don't need to spend a fortune to do it. In this module, you'll learn whether installing a home studio is right for you, how to choose between an astounding array of valuable technology and how you can take the guess work out of the process. Susan will recommend the best equipment for a home studio and share tips on how to do it right.

4:00-5:00 PM How to win more auditions directing yourself from home

Setting up a home studio is one thing. Knowing how to direct yourself is another! In this module, Diana and Susan will train you how to make winning choices when interpreting copy on your own without a director. You'll learn: how to know when then spot is "good enou gh" to send, how to make choices that will make you stand out from the crowd, how to avoid "brain freeze" and "freak outs" that can occur when you are alone in your room, staring at the mic and the script.

"Great credibility!"

Listen to Testimonial Now

"Oh, I had the jitters. I had the adrenaline going for me. I had to shake it all out. But I thought it was great. I had this trepidation of trying to find something that I could go to where I wasn’t wasting my money, where I would get good industry contacts, good feedback, someone who has been around the block, who is still in the industry and who could tell me really what it is we should be doing as beginners. When I looked at Susan’s website I saw some of the credits. AT&T, I saw the CNBC clip that she did, I saw a local news spot in the NY market that she did. So, immediately that brings credibility. "

Day 3: Studio Sessions

Record one fully produced spot at EDGE STUDIOS, NYC

8:30 AM – 5 PM

We won’t have time to do a full demo, but you can add this recording to your demo at a later date. You’ll be directed by Susan Berkley and casting director Diana Boylston and recorded by Edge Studios professional engineers. Learn studio etiquette.

Hone your ability to take direction. Gain confidence and perfect your microphone technique. The spot you record can be edited into an existing or future demo.
