Do You Suffer From Mic Fright?

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General No Comments

Do microphones make you jumpy?  Does performing in class make you tense?  Do auditions make you a nervous wreck?  If you’re a voice-over artist or hope to become one, a bad case of nerves can be a real liability.  It can strike both beginner and experienced pro in class or worse, before or during a recording session.  Sweaty palms, cotton mouth, shakiness, feelings of panic, rapid heartbeat and a shaky, weak voice.  You might think: “I’ve worked so hard to get booked for this job.  I’ve always dreamed of a voice-over career.  Why is this happening to me?”

Performance anxiety or stage fright is one of the most common and terrifying fears.  The scary symptoms are caused by stress and a sudden overabundance of the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline in the bloodstream.  The good news is, the adrenaline rush is short-lived and the excess adrenaline will burn off as you perform.  But stage fright, if not dealt with, can paralyze and inhibit many performers.  The careers of Barbara Streisand, Carly Simon and others were limited by this problem.  Johnny Carson experienced incredible anxiety before every show.  But, performance anxiety doesn’t begin with the scary symptoms of stage fright.  It starts within the hidden reaches of our inner life.  Unfortunately, most people are so out of touch with themselves they don’t even know what their inner life is or how to begin trying to find it.  According to psychoanalyst Dr. Norberto Keppe, our inner life is the seat of our talent and abilities.  Artistic inspiration flows through us from a source greater than ourselves and that can be scary indeed.  But, what also scares us is seeing how we unconsciously block this flow and complicate our professional development.  I will be revealing the secrets of how I built (and continue to enjoy) a million dollar voice-over career at the next Voice-over Bootcamp October 11th-13th.  But, you’ll have to hurry.  There are only two seats available, so click here for more details or call Jason at 800-333-8108 x229 for more details.

Can You Shed Some Light?

“I have an agent in Pittsburgh and so far she has proven to be worthless (I know that sounds harsh, but it’s true).  I am quite good at this and simply need a break and really don’t know where to turn.  Any thoughts?  Thanks so much”.

Susan says:

You describe a common scenario.  You are not alone.  Here are some reasons why your agent may not be getting you work:

YOUR AGENT HASN’T BEEN GETTING CALLS FOR YOUR TYPE OF VOICE

I don’t know what kind of voice you have, but maybe it’s just not the type of voice that advertisers are looking for right now.  Let’s face it, Pittsburgh is a smaller market so opportunities might be more limited than they would be in NY or LA.

YOUR AGENT IS NOT A GOOD MARKETER

My hunch says that this is probably the reason.  Many (but not all) agents I know are frustrated voice talents or theatre people with poor business backgrouns.  They don’t really understand how hard you need to work to grow a business.  There are, of course, some notable exceptions.

THE AGENCY HAS TOO MANY OTHER VOICE TALENTS THAT SOUND LIKE YOU

If there are only a limited number of auditions with a limited number of spaces per audion, your agent might be favoring other voice talent with a better track record or their exclusive signed clientele.

THE PITTSBURGH VOICE-OVER MARKET IS SLOW

Sometimes there are market forces we can’t do anything about.  But, a talent agent who understands marketing can find opportunities even in a slow market or expand into other markets using the internet.

YOUR DEMO CD IS WEAK

I haven’t heard it, so I don’t know.  But, often an agency will add your demo to their house reel or website and send it to potential clients.  Your demo must be a real “grabber” so you stand out from the pack and get people to sit up and take notice.

There is a lesson here for all of us.  You cannot depend on anyone else for success.  I don’t care if you work and live in NY, LA, Pittsburgh or Sheboygan.  No one is coming to your rescue.  You must study marketing and learn how to do it yourself.  I will be revealing the secrets of how I built (and continue to enjoy) a million dollar voice-over career at the next Voice-over Bootcamp Oct 11th-13th.  But, you’ll have to hurry.  There are only two seats available, so click here for more details or call Jason at 800-333-8108 x229 for more details.

Never Say You Are A Beginner

A subscriber writes:

“It seems sort of odd that you tell us NEVER say you are a beginner & in the cover letter you say to state your experience (if any).  If you don’t have experience and you don’t tell them so in your cover letter), wouldn’t the prospect get it figured out & throw your cd in the trash?  Jim

I firmly believe that if a prospect knows you are a beginner, he or she won’t want to hire you, unless you are willing to work for free.  Therefore, it’s especially important to get training that not only prepares you to perform professionally behind the mic, but also to present yourself professionally in your marketing materials so the question of whether you are a beginner or not will never even enter their mind.  This is what we teach you at The Great Voice Company in our teleseminars and Bootcamps.  When a prospect working for a company makes a buying decision about voice talent, he sees no benefit in working with a beginner.  The kind of people you SHOULD want to work with won’t be wanting to pinch pennies by working with a newbie.  They’re more concerned with looking good to customers and co-workers because they chose the right vendor who got the job done right the first time, met their budget and their timeline.  Few voice talent realize that what they’re really selling is not merely their voice, but their trustworthiness, reliability, professionalism and even their celebrity (even on the small town local level).  I say celebrity, because this gives the people who hire them bragging rights at the water cooler, elevating their status among their peers, a huge plus for cubicle workers in big, dull companies.  So, if your skills are not to the point where you can’t make a professional sounding demo, don’t.  Wait until you’re ready.  With a good coach and a great director, it’s possible for a beginner to make a strong entrance in the market and launch their career in record time.  The first step is to get a voice assessment from our talent coordinator Jason Davis.  If you haven’t already done, so please give him a call at 800-333-8108 during east coast business hours and ask him how to audition for our upcoming teleclass or email jason@greatvoice.com.

The Most Overlooked Way to be Successful in Voice-over…FINALLY, Someone’s Talking About It

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General, Voice Over Products No Comments

Let me get right to the point. Most people think a great voice is all you need to become a successful voice-over artist. Or maybe it’s having a great agent or who you know. Some people even think you can become massively successful by selling your voice services on the internet for the lowest possible price (boy, are they wrong!).

These aren’t proven strategies. They’re myths – sure-fire recipes for frustration and failure.I’ve observed that there are 7 “X-Factors” that all successful voice talents share and they have nothing to do with agents, rock-bottom prices or even the sound of your voice.

They are:

  1. The “Fun Factor”: the ability to bring feel-good energy to your clients and prospects
  2. Self-direction know-how
  3.  A proven and tested marketing plan
  4.  Positioning: how to target your marketing for fastest results
  5. Voice control: how to make your voice do what you want
  6. A few easy-to-learn technical skills so you can audition and work from home
  7. An experienced coach who can help you pull it all together so you don’t spin your  wheels and waste your valuable time or money.

Look, to enjoy voice-over success, you need to make this about more than the sound of your voice or your audio gear. Quality, turnaround time and how you communicate what the customer gets when they buy from you are just as important.  How important? Well, knowing how to implement these 7 x-factors will make all the difference between just talking about a successful voice-over career and actually having one.

I’ll be stepping you through everything you need to get started and prosper in voice-over in my next Voice-over Bootcamp at a top New York City recording studio, October 11th-13th, 2008.

And, if you register for the Bootcamp this Wednesday August 27 you’ll get a whopping $500 discount on your investment. Go here now to get all the juicy details http://www.greatvoice.com/bootcamp.asp

We had a terrific Bootcamp in Sausalito, CA, outside of San Francisco
last weekend.  I must admit I love Northern California and beautiful Marin County.

What a thrill it was to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and look back through the

silvery fog at that gorgeous city by the bay. The eucalyptus-scented air was

fresh and cool, the food fantastic, and the vibe relaxed, mellow and very

healing. We spent three days in famous “Studio D”, which is one of the

bay area’s most historic recording studios. There were gold and platinum

records all over the walls, including records by Maria Muldaur and

Huey Lewis and the News, which were recorded there.  Bonnie Raitt

also did some sessions for Maria Muldaur’s latest album there recently.

Studio owner Joel Jaffe and his assistant Matt, made us feel right at home

and we were able to record some incredible demo tracks from all the talent

who joined us. Must have been the spirit of Jerry Garcia in the air!

In Loving Memory of my father Michael Silberkleit, Chairman, Archie Comics

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General, Voice Over Products 8 Comments

Last night, a few hours before I was about to board the plane for Los Angeles and Voice 2008, my father passed away after a brief battle with cancer. He was the Chairman of Archie Comics, a company co-founded by Grandfather Louis Silberkleit. Here’s a recent picture of my Dad and a picture of my family in 1967. That’s me in yellow next to my sister Amy in green. My father is on the left with my Mom and my Grandfather and Grandmother are on the right.  My brother David is up front.

Susan’s Family        Susan’s Dad

I’m proud that my father always stood firm against violence in children’s media and for the contribution he made to American popular culture through the comic book icons Archie and his friends. Many hearts are heavy today. He will be missed.

I regret that I will be unable to attend Voice 2008, but will be coming to San Francisco as planned for the Voice-over Bootcamp Weekend with Jay Ginsberg and Rodney Saulsberry, August 15th-17th.

Here’s more about my Dad……

Michael I. Silberkleit, the chairman of Archie Comic Publications, died August 5th in New York City at the age of 76, after a short battle with cancer.

For much of the 60 years he worked at Archie Comics, Silberkleit shared the leadership of the company with Richard Goldwater, whose father, John Goldwater, and his partner Louis Silberkleit, Michael’s father, founded the company.

The sons, who began working at the company as boys, later steered Archie Comics into the modern era of publishing as electronic production techniques and brand licensing became important. They encouraged the  development of  new characters, such as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Josie and the Pussycats, and successfully licensed these and other characters through Archie Comics Entertainment. Silberkleit was also Executive consultant to the TV program, Sabrina and the Teenage Witch, a long running series starring Melissa Joan Hart. The company also published comic books as a licensee, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog. At various times Silberkleit was chairman of the Comics Association of America.

The centerpiece identity of the company, which is based in Mamaroneck, N.Y., remains the brightly innocent presence of Archie and his girlfriends Betty and Veronica. Working for the company founders, whose inspiration for Archie came from the Andy Hardy movies, Bob Montana designed the likenesses of the Archie characters who made their comic debut in 1941.

Over the decades Michael Silberkleit and Richard Goldwater steadfastly refused to introduce the more worldly and darker elements of teenage life, like sex and drugs and violence, into the Archie storylines. In doing so they preserved an image of adolescence for the target audience of 7-to-12 year olds.

Silberkleit was determined  to keep Archie,  an American institution ,  pure as childhood yet  up-to-date with the latest technology used by children today. For generations of readers, Archie and the Gang have represented the wonder and magic of  childhood and Silberkleit fought successfully to keep this vision alive.

Unlike some competitors who use longer formats, Archie Comics continues its tradition of telling accessible, short stories. In one of the many interviews Silberkleit gave, he said, “The fact that our stories are funny, are non-violent, believable, clean and appropriate for youngsters makes us so appealing to the younger reader. This philosophy hasn’t changed for more than 60 years. Many parents grew up reading Archie Comics and feel that our comics are appropriate for their kids.”

After an initial public offering in the early 1970s, when Silberkleit served as Treasurer, Archie Comics shares were traded publicly. But after ten years Silberkleit and his partner Goldwater bought the company back from shareholders and held it as a private, family-owned business thereafter.  Currently, the company publishes over 10 million comics per year in a dozen languages worldwide.

Born in New York City in 1932, Silberkleit attended the Fieldston School before going to Albright College as an undergraduate. He studied law after his graduation.

Silberkleit was also active in the community, volunteering as an auxiliary policeman for the Scarsdale Police force.

A resident of Rye and East Hampton, N.Y., Silberkleit indulged his mechanical aptitude with vintage sports cars, spending several years restoring a 1966 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lind Silberkleit and their daughter Alexandria, and by three adult children from a prior marriage to Karen Silberkleit: Susan Berkley, David Silberkleit and Amy Silberkleit, as well as grandchildren Isis and Elijah Shiffer.

A private funeral and memorial service is planned for Sunday, August 10th.  The family asks that, in lieu of flowers or other memorials, donations should be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Research
