Of all the things you’ll ever do in voice overs, the hardest is to simply get started.
To dive in and know you’ll be able to swim.
Newcomers struggle because they almost always start by asking the question:
“How do I know if I have any talent?”
“How do I know if I have what it takes?
That’s the wrong question.
You see, true talent– the stuff that lasting voice over careers and big bucks are made of, isn’t something you either have or you don’t.
Talent is not a matter of potential.

Why do I want to do this?
Well, that’s an interesting question. The short answer is that I enjoy helping people. Because of that, I have a passion for voice work that falls into the eLearning or training arena. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to do other things in VO like commercials, but I’d like to create a VO career that focuses on things that are helping people, whether it’s helping them live a better life, or helping them to learn a new piece of software.

I want to start a voiceover career because Ever since I was little I always enjoyed cartoons and wonder how the actors made the cartoon sound real I wish I recived a lot more exposure to voiceover when I was much younger but at lest I’m learning about it now and I can’t see myself in life doing anything else! 😀
I am retiring from teaching this year. I need to look at another career option. I’ve done much announcing at events for years. People tell me that I have a voice with personality, whatever that means. This prospect intrigues me.
There’s so much I need to learn. Although I went to a school for this but times and techniques have changed. I was never taught the sales and marketing aspect of it. But you are correct that a person should humble themselves and learn! That’s what I’m doing and I’m grateful!
I would love to do this because it seems like it could be very lucrative for someone like me who does not have a college education. I can read very well and my husband always says I have a great voice and I should be doing this. I enjoyed acting out characters to my kids when they were little from the children’s books I read them so I wonder if maybe I could be great at this type of work. My problem is no money to get started. I would have to add to my debt by putting anything I participate in on a credit card. I have mucho debt so this is a huge problem. ;-(
The hardest things to stop and don’t try. I really love to do commercial, characters for cartoons and video games, and movie trailers too. Me not making the money right now is holding back right now, so I be patience the best I can until I can make my own home studio. I have a big enough closet to do it, but I know I need more sound proofing in my closet.
Ever since I found Susan’s website I have been excited. This is a career I wish I would have studied in college. I love to lector at my church and I loved reading books to my children when they were younger. Now it’s a question of getting started without spending a fortune. I have trouble getting large projects started. It’s daunting! And with 4 kids and a husband to take care of days just slip away and this desire gets put on the back burner and never started. I need someone here in Texas who can get me on the right track and get over the hump.
I worked in broadcasting (AM, FM & TV), as a voice talent, a combination of part-time and full-time, for about five years during the ’80s. I absolutely loved it! It was a real adrenaline rush. But I needed to be realistic about earning a living, and broadcasting just wasn’t doing it. So…here I am, almost 30 years later, thinking of a semi-retirement from I.T. consulting, by doing what I loved so much then. Voiceover is definitely it.
As a registered nurse for the last 34 years, I’ve enjoyed providing a valuable service to the special-needs kids I care for. I have always been fascinated by the Art of Voice, and think this would be a terrific career to transition into to have fun, make money, and serve others.
I’ve thought about voice over for a long time now, since about 15-20 years or so, when my husband and I were house hunting newlyweds there was a new england sunday morning real estate listing show and the womans voice who described all the listings fascinated me and pulled me in. I thought wow how did she get that job and I’d love to do that. I never pursued it though because I had no idea how to. I have an ear for voices and can pick out all the celebrity voices in commercials. Celeb voice overs have become so popular so it sparked my interest again and I decided to look into it and stumbled across Susans programs on the internet. Can’t wait to give it all a try!
