So…you’re getting ready to launch your voice over career (or thinking about it).
One of the thorniest issues I see newcomers struggling with is auditions.
These days, with all the on-line casting services, getting auditions isn’t the problem.
It’s booking the job (and actually making some money) that frustrates people.
Some people do hundreds of auditions without booking a thing.
They lose confidence, throw in the towel and put their equipment up for sale on eBay.
I call that “the voice over walk of shame” and it’s ugly.
They assume that the reason they are not successful is because there’s something wrong with them.
And that’s just flat out wrong, and it breaks my heart
You see, the reason for their failure is …
They’re playing the wrong game and they don’t even know it!

Hi Susan ~ Thank you for you newsletter and the latest video message. I have been reading and following your advice for several years more or less voyeuristically. I have been doing Voice Over on a part time basis for 7 or 8 years with minor success. Since I work full time at a rather demanding job, the time I have to devote to the VO is somewhat limited.
You where spot on when you recognize how many times aspiring VO artists will simply give up from lack of bookings. I can’t tell you how many times I have been ready to throw it in, but have always managed to get encouragement from many of my tutors and teachers in the biz, many whom, I’m sure you know or recognize. They, like you, say the same thing: “NEVER GIVE UP!”
The thing is that I probably barely break even on a yearly basis considering how much I generally spend on training, travel, equipment, etc. I will be retiring from my full time job in just under a year and a half and intend to devote much more time to the VO business which I am hopeful will result in more worthwhile bookings.
Sorry this is such a long-winded message, and if you are still reading, bravo! 🙂 Thanks again for all your great advise and encouragements over the years and I hope you keep it up because I would, one day, like to meet you and perhaps get some personalized training form you. I believe my weakest element is marketing, so anything you might suggest along those lines would be much appreciated.

Am using Audacity and having a problem with getting good quality sound on the MP3’s with the USB mic. Have a good one (Rode, but can’t seem to get the level right. Maybe some video tips on using the Mics and/or diff software? Know you prefer WAVE software, so maybe a short clip on the pros and cons of each program. Thanks for considering.
