Ever hear the expression “Jack-of-all-trades, master of none”?
It’s a tired old cliché but there’s wisdom here that applies to your voice over career.
The lesson is: don’t try to be all things to all people.
Choose a niche market (or two) and focus!
I learned this lesson the hard way when I was starting my career.
I put a really bad witch voice on my demo, thinking that I needed to show people I could do characters.
A big New York City agent who listened to that early demo practically laughed in my face.
Ouch! I was so embarrassed I wanted to disappear.
That’s why when we work with emerging talent in our Voice Over Training Institute the first thing we do is help them pick their best voice over niche.
This way their efforts are focused and we can really help them skyrocket their career.
I’ve identified 14 niche markets and in today’s video training I give you an overview of Niche #5, Medical Narrations
Check it out below I think you’ll find the inspiration and help you need.
And after you watch the video I want to know your thoughts, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve at this awhile. Does the medical niche resonate for you? If not, what else are you thinking about?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments box. I want to read about what’s on your mind so I can support you.
To your voice over success,
Susan Berkley,

Hello Susan, this is my niche. I am a trained medical assistant since 1991 and I’ve been teaching medical assistants for over 6 years now. As you were describing the qualities of a good medical narrator they all sounded like me.
Thanks, Elaine
Hello, thanks for your discussion of the opportunities in medical narration voice-over. I was wondering if you know of a central source for companies /organizations that would be hiring talent and the appropriate department to contact.
This sounds like a great niche! I’ve worked as a tech writer for two very large biotech firms (Beckman Coulter and Abbott Medical). It was my job to explain difficult concepts to medical professionals.. so I guess I have a bit of medical experience. 😉 I’m looking forward to pursuing this niche.
Having worked in the healthcare field for many years, medical narration is my passion. I have had a medical narration demo produced and it’s on my website. So far, however, I haven’t been able to get my foot in the door anywhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
Deb
Ha! I love your candor, Susan, and I always enjoy watching your videos. Your advice is fantastic and something I’ve followed since I began subscribing several months ago. Thanks for sharing such great information!
