Have you done your voice over demo yet?
You might be surprised at some of the common demo mistakes people make that sabotage their chances of becoming successful before they even begin.
I thought long and hard about the demos people send me and my production company and came up with this list of 10 common voice over demo mistakes.
It’s hard to believe but making even one of these mistakes can get your demo trashed.
(Even if you already have a demo you should check this out and make sure you haven’t made any of them).
This week I have your back as always. 🙂

As always, great advice Susan. Keep ’em coming.
Sure will, Brian. Thanks for writing-Susan
Great list…although :90? I’ve always heard :60. Can it be either?
Thanks for writing Benjamin. It depends. If you can do an engaging :90 then go for it, but if you can get the job done in :60 shorter is better. There’s no hard and fast rule. If you are a newcomer and dont have alot of range and skill yet, shorter is better. You never want to bore the listener and in today’s ADHD world thats harder and harder to do.
Great information as always Susan. Thank you for your professional insight. I must add. I watched your Webinar yesterday “What Every Beginner VO Talent Ought To Know About Microphones”. It was priceless to me as I am getting ready to set up my own in-home studio and now realize I may have purchased the wrong mic. Not realizing, until learning from you and Chris that I should try out a few mics. before purchasing one, to be sure it fits my voice. You may have saved me from a very costly mistake. I took many notes and look forward to having the perfect studio that suites me. NOW, if I could get some training on how to correctly record, edit, etc., etc.????? Since I haven’t found my niche yet, I will be recording a few more demos, (professionally done, of course), show casing my different voices that I am very comfortable with. I will remember all this valuable and very helpful information when getting my scripts ready. Thank you Susan for caring so much to help us “newbies”. Warm Regards, Marilyn
Thanks Marilyn! Seems like you would be perfect for our Bootcamp Oct 8-10 in NYC. We can give you the training you need. Hope to see you there. Susan
Susan,
After hearing your recording I want to fire everyone I have met that says, they want to help me.
You made it so simple. And you said, things that are useful to me. Until this very moment people have told me I sound like an announcer in my auditions. But they never told me what an announcer sounds like.
‘Duh”!
Thank you…Susan!
Yikes! You’re fired? Don’t go all Trump on us:-) Glad I was so helpful and thanks for writing. Susan
