So you book your first professional voice over.
Congratulations! You’re so excited you tell everyone you know.
You’ve got the script, your home studio is all ready to go and your client will be calling in to direct you over the phone.
The session begins, things start out pretty well, but then the client asks you to read certain lines over and over again, directing you to try it this way and that.
They don’t seem upset or anything but the session goes on and on.
Why aren’t they satisfied? Are you doing something wrong?
You start to sweat. Your throat goes dry. This is your first voice over job, but you fear it will be your last.

Susan, you are always so encouraging! You also address all those little areas that the newcomer would not find out unless he had “paid his dues”, so to speak. I can’t wait til the boot camp! Your team is also offering other value adds in the meantime. Mark has given me personal advise and guidance and you are offering a call-in this month on the 26th (Yay!).
In the meantime I am recording two audiobooks (with an accent no less, pwhew!) and hoping to get some other work through pay-to-play (Voices.com and Fiver). Have got to develop a marketing strategy that reaches corporate clients as well as production houses. I think I’ll look at the local market first as a warm up.

Thanks but isn’t it my job to do it the way the client wants it. After all are they not paying for my service.
Of course Ken. You should always do what the client wants. Hope I didn’t confuse the issue here. The point is to hang in there, try to give them what they want without freaking out. 🙂 SB

I’m just starting in audio books and haven’t produced one yet. I have all my equipment and finally figured out my latency problem. I used to hate my voice until I aquired a Komplete Audio 6. My recordings are starting to sound really good (to me)now. I’m on fixed income now and am looking forward to getting into some audio book recording. Also looking forward to some possible extra income! Sincerely Daryl Corle
