Are you consulting YouTube for voice over advice? Many people do. But there’s a hidden down side to those videos you might not be aware of that I explore in depth in this weeks Inside Voice Over video article. Scroll down for the inside scoop. You may be surprised at what I have to share…

Whenever I try to do something I don’t know how to do, I don’t try to figure it out on my own. I consult the experts who have been there and done that so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel. And I always go to the top people.

Sometimes you can get the job done quickly and cheaply, even for free, but sometimes you have to invest in some real expertise.

Last weekend I was helping my boyfriend pack for a business trip to Korea. He doesn’t usually wear a suit, let alone travel to Korea. But he’ll be presenting soon after he arrives and he’ll need to go into his meeting wrinkle free.

In the case of the business suit we went to You Tube and found several great videos from guys who showed us step by step how to pack a suit and keep it wrinkle free. We followed their instructions and got the job done.

YouTube taught me how to make a lattice topped pie crust and I understand there’s a video that shows you how to change the brakes on your car -If you’ve got the guts to try it.

It’s no secret that there are lots of voice over how-to to videos on YouTube too, including some of my own. But unfortunately you won’t get beyond the basics by watching them.

To become a working pro, you need to a coach and a mentor to listen to your voice and give you objective, supportive feedback in a way you can’t do for yourself. That’s because we listen to our voice from inside our head where our sound is distorted by the bones of our skull. Only an experienced coach can give you objective feedback and bring out the best in you.

Experience this personalized coaching for yourself at our upcoming Voice Over Bootcamp Recording Studio Immersion Experience, Sept. 29-30 at Avatar Studios in New York City, the last Bootcamp I’ll be doing this year.
