Positive affirmations won’t do it. An extra dose of self-esteem won’t do it.
Even having a string of bookings under your belt won’t always help.
A crisis of confidence behind the mic can strike at any time.
It can be as mild as a few butterflies in your stomach or as severe as paralyzing speech fright.
And if you’ve ever felt it, you’re not alone.
Baseball fans might be familiar with the story of Rick Ankiel, a pitcher with the St Louis Cardinals. He had the talent to be one of the best pitchers ever.
Then one day he lost it.
He was overcome by anxiety in the middle of a playoff game and his pitches went wild, with millions of people watching. He eventually became a great outfielder but his ability to pitch was mysteriously lost forever.
I guarantee this won’t happen to you behind the mic. But if you’re feeling at all nervous about starting your voice over career, today’s training video is for you.
In this week’s Inside Voice Over video training blog I explore the roots of self-confidence, what works and what doesn’t.

Thanks Susan,
Good suggestions. One other thing that I heard in training at one time (maybe from you?) is to think “How would someone who was experienced / confident / comfortable do this?” and then play that role. Not copying the person, but more the way they did things. Fake it until you make it. The same approach works in other fields, and in life itself.
Please keep these little sessions coming. I find them helpful.
JJ
Maybe you’re thinking of how I handled being on the Howard Stern show, thinking about Mike McCord and Imus. But anyway, so happy this helped Thanks JJ!
You’re absolutely right, Susan! Getting out of your own head and focusing on the customer is the only solution to over-critiquing yourself.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Glad I was helpful, Jeff. Thanks for writing
Thanks Susan, you hit the nail on the head with me. When I have done any scrip reading in the past, I’m always trying to be someone that I’m not. If I can read scrip like I talk to my family and friends I might have more courage when I’m reading. Great training video.
Thanks,Susan, your suggestions have been very helpful for a newbie like myself trying to figure this profession out. Your fantastic

Thanks, Brian. You’ve got it– just be yourself! Glad I was helpful
Radically anti-narcissist! I love it!
